Synopsis

There are several Brunel biographical booklets, but this one is unique. Michael Turner is the first author to tabulate the Brunel story to present his life succinctly and chronologically using 824 facts alone! Furthermore, and surprisingly, this is the first booklet to include maps of Brunel locations and his railway empire hence, this volume reveals contextual geographical Brunel knowledge. Interestingly, besides including all the famous structures, the least-known of Brunel’s works and movements feature. The Brunel fieldworker, scholar, and armchair traveller alike, will enjoy this publication that encapsulates Brunel’s life: his engineering and landscape gardening achievements, personality, financial affairs, family life and travels at a comprehensive, pictorial glance. This is a booklet with a record amount of standard and lesser-known facts. Never was there so much information incorporated in so few pages. It is Brunel on-point throughout!

Review

‘This booklet on Isambard Kingdom Brunel is absolutely fantastic. The 824 facts are structured chronologically, creating a vivid and fast-paced portrait of a remarkable man. As a lifelong Brunel fan, I can honestly say — this is the book I wish I’d written.

‘The maps and images add real depth, especially the one showing Brunel’s travels across the UK — incredible to visualise when you remember much of it was on horseback. Highlights include a rare drawing of the Khonsu Temple in Egypt alongside a modern photo showing the same chip in the lintel, and a striking image of the railway slicing through Regency Bath.

‘It’s a perfect companion for any Brunel enthusiast — informative, engaging, and genuinely inspiring. I’ve read it multiple times, and each time I learn something new. I didn’t want it to end, and I can’t wait to read the full biography when it’s ready.’
